The site for this dramatic remodel of a ranch style home was once the formal garden of the grand Mediterranean style villa above it. Rather than simply draping a new building in a period costume, we chose to combine the favorable attributes of older building styles with modern preferences for light quality and building technique. The exterior of the home has been almost entirely rebuilt. The stucco recalls its sun-drenched Mediterranean origins, but here it is used in a modern manner. Punched windows have been re-imagined as large breaks in the facade that extend to the roof. The existing concrete retaining walls of the home have been cleaned up and remain exposed, a memory of what was there before. The outcome is a home that relates to its environment without imitating it.
